Top 5 new movies and TV series to watch this week
Last week we saw two big movies hit the screens. Ponniyin selvan 2 and Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum, and both continue to do well in cinemas. Expectedly, this week is a bit quieter. But we do have, Afwaah that looks very promising for the unconventional pairing of power performers Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bhumi Pednekar. The Malayalam film 2018 also has some big star names in its cast and one to watch out for.
On the OTT front, Corona Papers in Malayalam and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar in Hindi, both of which have done their theatrical rounds, are among the big attractions.
Afwaah review: A political tale of the times
Sudhir Mishra is no stranger to political polemics. He brings that understanding to contemporary events, and the result is a powerful indictment of a system in which politics and media are in the same bed.
Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo review: Artificially high
In Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, the story of a women-centric drug cartel had the potential to be an intriguing and powerful tale. However, the series suffers from an overemphasis on sex, violence, and drugs, which detract from the plot and give the impression that the director and writers are more focused on cheap thrills.
Ponniyin Selvan 2 Review: Mani pulls it off again
Ponniyin Selvan, both the parts, can now be classified as successes, and it is down to one man’s courage and conviction. Mani Ratnam’s belief in his ability to make a movie out of an epic that had challenged and eventually dissuaded the likes of MGR and Kamal Haasan is the real cornerstone. He deserves every plaudit coming his way. The man has made history with a historical.
Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan Review: It’s a Salman Khan movie
Frankly, the toughest assignment, even for veteran critics, is to review a Salman Khan movie for what it is. It is impossible to critique it dispassionately, especially if one had seen it along with his multitude of fans. The celebratory atmosphere and the rambunctious fun at the theatres can skew the viewing experience. And if the film is even half-decently made, it is impossible not to enjoy it. But arriving at this mean, the half-decent is tough.
